Classical Chinese Acupuncture

Classical Chinese Acupuncture

The fast, precise, meridian-based approach rooted in Dr Tan’s Balance Method

Classical Chinese Acupuncture is a gentle, highly effective system of acupuncture that works by restoring balance through the meridian network. Instead of needling directly where the pain is, this method uses distal points — points on the arms, legs, and head — to create fast, measurable change in the area of discomfort.

This approach is rooted in the classical meridian relationships found in the I Ching and Ba Gua, and was developed into a clear, repeatable clinical system by Dr Richard Teh-Fu Tan. Many people feel relief within minutes because the treatment focuses on correcting the underlying channel imbalance rather than chasing symptoms.

You remain fully clothed throughout, and the treatment is gentle, precise, and deeply regulating for the whole body.

How It Works

Classical Chinese Acupuncture uses mirror and image mapping to identify which meridian is affected and which corresponding meridian can be used to rebalance it. By treating the “partner” meridian, the body’s natural flow is restored, and pain or tension often reduces quickly.

Think of it as opening a tap upstream to clear a blockage downstream.

How It Differs from TCM Acupuncture

Although both systems use the same meridians and acupuncture points, the approach is different.

Classical Chinese Acupuncture

  • Uses distal points (far from the pain)
  • Focuses on meridian relationships and channel balance
  • Known for immediate in-session results
  • Rooted in classical theory and the channel system
  • Clear, structured, and repeatable

TCM Acupuncture

  • Often needles directly where the pain is
  • Uses pattern diagnosis (e.g., Liver Qi stagnation)
  • Results may build more gradually
  • Draws from a wide range of diagnostic frameworks

Both systems are valid — they simply work differently.
Classical Channel Acupuncture is designed for fast, precise, whole-body change.

What It Can Help With

This method is widely used for:

  • Neck, shoulder, back, hip, and knee pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Stress-related tension
  • Digestive discomfort
  • Women’s health
  • Chronic and acute pain
  • Neurological symptoms

Because it works through the meridian system, it can support both recent flare-ups and long-standing patterns.

What a Session Feels Like

You remain fully clothed and comfortably seated or lying down.
The needles are placed on the arms, legs, or head — never directly into the painful area.

Most people describe the experience as:

  • light
  • calming
  • relieving
  • surprisingly fast
  • deeply regulating

Many feel a shift within minutes.

Why I Use the Balance Method

I use Classical Chinese Acupuncture, rooted in the Balance Method, because it is:

  • gentle
  • effective
  • clinically precise
  • rooted in lineage
  • and offers clients real-time change

This approach allows me to work safely, clearly, and confidently with a wide range of conditions while supporting the whole system, not just the symptom.

How This Treatment Can Help You

Every person arrives with their own story — pain that’s recent, pain that’s long-standing, tension that won’t shift, or a sense that something in the body simply isn’t flowing as it should. Classical Chinese Acupuncture offers a way of working that is gentle, clear, and responsive. It allows your system to settle, rebalance, and find ease again — often more quickly than people expect.

My intention is always the same: to help your body change in real time, to create space where there was tension, and to support you in feeling more at home in yourself.

About Dr Richard Teh-Fu Tan

Dr Richard Teh-Fu Tan (1947–2015) was a Taiwanese-American acupuncturist and scholar who developed the Balance Method, a classical channel-based acupuncture system rooted in the I Ching and the meridian relationships of ancient Chinese medicine. His work brought clarity, structure, and clinical precision to acupuncture practice, influencing practitioners worldwide. The system he developed continues through the lineage he established and remains one of the most respected approaches to distal acupuncture today.
