Autoimmune Diseases

An autoimmune disease is the result of the immune system accidentally attacking the body instead of protecting it. It is not known why the immune system does this but with no cure in sight, there are over 100 known autoimmune diseases.

Inflamation

Inflamation is a response of the immune system to protect the body from infection and injury. Its sole purpose is to locate and remove damaged tissue so that the body can begin to recover. So inflamation is our friend, without it we would suffer severe problems by not detecting infection or a wound, so it doesn’t make sense in totally removing it.

However sometimes the inflammation does not end with the healing of the infection or wound, and it becomes chronic, disproportional, and finally deteriorates the organs causing fibrosis, tissue destruction. This type of chronic inflamation is involved in the development of many diseases, from autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthiritis, lupus, inflamatory bowel disease to hypertension, cardiovascular disorders, cancer, obesity, diabetes, or mental disorders.

Pain as result of chronic inflammation

Pain can disrupt daily life in different ways, preventing us from performing basic tasks. Some of us experience pain when lifting objects, climbing stairs, walking, or running and sometimes even standing still. There are several causes of pain from inflammation such as germs, bacteria, viruses, external injuries, effects of chemical agents or radiation.

Pain and long term stress

Long term stress and tension appears to increase blood levels of inflammatory markers. Inflamation cannot be controlled, resulting in further tissue damage and without proper treatment can result in a destructive cycle of inflmmation and damage. The damage caused by inflammation can change the bones and other joint issues by affecting their shape causing pain and difficulty when making movements.
